This week has been an important week in the history of my town of Shepshed. We have a new club in town – The Shepshed Cycling Club to join the Running club and the Swimming Club and many others to promote health, wellbeing and friendship for the wonderful people of Shepshed.
We had our inaugural ride last Sunday when a group of 20 cyclists went out towards Belton and then took the Cloud 6 trail to Melbourne. After a refreshment break we headed back via Wilson and Tonge, riding through some stunning English countryside.
The new club boasts an age range of 20 to 83 and a couple on a tandem! Everyone looked out for others and it turned out to be a most enjoyable event. Already people are planning next Sunday’s ride. The highlight of course was Betty, our sprightly 83 year old who used to be a serious cyclist in her younger days and still cycling and complaining that her cohort of 70 year old cyclists can’t keep up with her! What an inspiration. My shame is that I did not even know of her before this Sunday. I certainly hope to make up for this and look forward to many rides out with this remarkable lady.
It was equally heartening to have so many youngsters in their 20s coming out to join us. They of course are the future and it was lovely to see them taking a lead role in shepherding everyone else.
My own training has taken a minor setback but nothing much to worry about as I get back on track. This weekend is Father’s day and will be an opportunity to sit back and see to fathering duties! Come Monday it will be back on to serious training.
Thanks to all my supporters for the massive sponsorship which is going so well. For others who wish to sponsor me please do so on

Finally I would like to leave you with an adoring image of my all time hero Bradley Wiggins with his family at the conclusion of his World One Hour record last Sunday. This picture encapsulates family life and Fathers Day. To all of you out there have a great weekend.

Glad the inaugural event went so well. Inspiring to hear about the 83 year old cyclist. Stories like this need to be told over and over again through the media. People need to see this as the “norm”, not an aberration.
Enjoy your upcoming Father’s Day. Time spent with the family is priceless.
Be well.

Hi Ron
Hopefully once we are properly up and running we shall have routes advertised in the Shepshed Eye. Currently it is 9.30 am start every Sunday starting from Shepshed Town Council offices on Charnwood Road opposite Tesco. Routes currently are ad hoc and we re trying to accommodate all abilities. But the club is already on Strava so nothing to stop people linking up for longer or more difficult rides. Next monthly club meeting on Wed 5 Aug at the Black swan at 7.45pm You are invited to come along.
